On January 29, 2019, actor Jussie Smollett reported to the Chicago Police a hate crime that he had actually staged. Smollett arranged for two Nigerian brothers he worked with to physically attack him. While wearing ski masks, they yelled racist and homophobic slurs. They poured bleach on him and placed a noose around his neck. Smollett claimed the men shouted “MAGA country”. He arranged the attack to occur near surveillance cameras on purpose, so video could be made public.
